High School Baseball Players and Parents often ask us where do we start the recruiting process, We say, Yourself!

1. Know Yourself

A) Who am I as a “Person?”

- How do I think?
- What are my life experiences such as travel, community involvement, etc.?
- Do I have cultural or social diversity?
- How do I act when I am faced with certain situations?
- What do I think of self first or put others ahead me?
- Am I a confident in social settings?
- Do I like to help others?
- What are my beliefs? I am a risk taker or do I like a sure thing?
- How do I communicate?
- Am a I patient person?
and so on.

B) Who am I as a “Student?”

- What do I like about school?
- Good attendance?
- I am a slow learner in some subjects? Why?
- Do I remember image or word?
- Do I read and write fast but have trouble retaining information?
- Do I mind spending extra time studying when friends are asking me to do something?
- With just a little effort could I provide myself higher marks on assignments?
- Would I be willing to get a tutor?
and so on.

C) Who am I as a “Player?”

- Why do I play baseball in the first place?
- Do I do what everybody else is doing and play follow the leader?
- Am I an Athlete who plays baseball or a baseball player?
- Have a matured and started to grow early?
- If I am a pitcher, what’s my pitch count this year, do I throw too much, or too early?
- Can I read the bat?
- Do I ask quality questions and try to learn as much I can.
- What do I know about the game of baseball, everything or not enough?
- Is what I am learning about baseball trivia or specific to my development?
and so on.

2. Putting it all together in "Time".

What do I have now “today” vs. Where do I what to be in 1 developmental year from now,
as a person, student and a baseball player?

Freshmen have less than 4 years until first day of college
Sophomores have less than 3 years until first day of college
Juniors have less than 2 years until first day of college
A Senior has less than 1 short year until first day of college

3. Take Inventory

- What do I have to work with? (Phone landline or cell $, Email, Dial up or DSL, etc.)
- Who is assisting me with my goal? What is their role?
- What can my parents do to help me?
- Do my parents know truly what I am passionate about?
- Is what you like reality or is there another way to get there? What are your options?
- What is my Budget or “opportunity Fund” for this year?
- What is my schedule and life balance like?
and so on.

4. Identify your Goal, Vision and make a commitment to better yourself.

- What am I willing to do to succeed in my personal development when nobody's watching?
- How hungry am I?

5. Acquire Specific Knowledge that will help YOU.

- Research - Take a walk in someone else’s shoes today whether it's directed at life, academics or baseball!
- Student Development
- Player Development
- Personal Development
- Communication - Networking
- Understand the true nature of Student-Player Promotion and how to do it for yourself.

6. Take Action.

Plan my route and course of action toward my 1 year goal with 3 month milestones.
- Continued Knowledge (know the business)
- Build Experience
- Development
- Networking
- Record, Assess and Measure 3mth milestones.
- Do I make changes or keep on course.

and so on ……….
